When you remember an event, your brain doesn't simply retrieve an untouched recording. Different pieces of information are brought back together.

This helps explain why memories can change over time, and why two people can experience the same event but later remember it differently.

Smell has an unusual relationship with autobiographical memory.

A particular scent can become associated with a person, place, or period of life. Encountering that scent years later can bring the associated memory back with surprising vividness.

A memory can feel completely real and still be wrong.

Human memory is not perfectly accurate. Research has shown that people can sometimes remember details that did not occur, or become confident in memories that have been altered.

Feeling certain about something is not always the same as being correct about it.
